SmartStop, a national self-storage provider, was facing ongoing security issues across its facilities — after-hours intrusions that resulted in property damage, theft, and escalating repair costs. Insurance premiums were rising, and customer safety was at risk.
The challenges were compounded by the nature of the sites, which included large properties, multiple access points, proximity to interstates, and limited on-site resources. Traditional intrusion systems were not enough. A more intelligent solution was required — one that could provide real-time visual verification, adapt to different sites, and offer complete coverage across expansive facilities.
Our Partner’s Approach
Security Source, a Pavion company, designed tailored systems for each SmartStop location. Where possible, existing cameras and intrusion devices were leveraged; in other cases, new designs and installations were deployed.
At the core of every installation was the CHeKT Video Control Panel. This open-platform device seamlessly integrates with new and existing cameras, alarm panels, and detection devices. When an alarm was triggered, the bridge securely streamed live footage to Security Source’s central station over an encrypted SSL connection. Operators could instantly verify the cause of the alarm and decide whether to dispatch police, dismiss the event, or notify the customer with video confirmation.

Despite daily customer activity at the sites, installations were completed in just one to two days, minimizing disruption and delivering an immediate impact.

The CHeKT Visual Verification system provided “eyes on sensors,” giving SmartStop complete coverage of its properties and protecting the integrity of inventory inside units. The solution delivered results that traditional intrusion systems could not match — from faster police response to reduced false alarms.
